The term "Medication-Assisted Treatment" is commonly used but considered outdated when describing treatment for opioid use disorder, specifically opioid dependence with addiction. Medical treatment utilizing buprenorphine/naloxone (Suboxone), methadone, or naltrexone (Vivitrol) is recognized as highly effective as a first-line treatment, reducing opioid withdrawal symptoms, cravings, and the risk of overdose.
Among the three effective options, buprenorphine/naloxone (Suboxone) can be administered through an online relationship with a Mindful Wellness medical provider.
It's important to note that treatment with buprenorphine/naloxone (Suboxone) is not a matter of replacing one addiction with another.
Buprenorphine is a medication primarily used in the treatment of opioid dependence and addiction. It is available under various brand names such as Suboxone, Subutex, and Sublocade. Buprenorphine works by binding to the same receptors in the brain that opioids bind to, thereby reducing cravings and withdrawal symptoms associated with opioid dependence. It is classified as a partial opioid agonist, meaning it activates opioid receptors but to a lesser extent compared to full opioid agonists like heroin or oxycodone. This property of buprenorphine makes it useful in helping individuals reduce or stop their use of opioids while minimizing the risk of overdose and withdrawal symptoms. Suboxone combines buprenorphine with naloxone, an opioid antagonist that discourages misuse by causing withdrawal symptoms if the medication is injected. Subutex contains only buprenorphine and is often used in the initial stages of treatment. Sublocade is a monthly injection formulation of buprenorphine designed for longer-term maintenance treatment. Buprenorphine is typically administered as part of a comprehensive treatment program that may include counseling, behavioral therapy, and other support services.
Naltrexone, often known by its brand name Vivitrol, is a long-lasting injectable medication administered once every 28 days. It's primarily used in the treatment of alcohol and opioid dependence. Unlike some other medications used for opioid dependence treatment, naltrexone doesn't produce any opioid effects or alleviate withdrawal symptoms. Instead, it acts as an antagonist, blocking the effects of opioids at the receptor level. This means that if someone on naltrexone were to use opioids, they would not experience the typical effects, such as euphoria or pain relief. It's important to note that individuals must undergo a 7-10 day withdrawal period from all opioids before starting naltrexone treatment. Naltrexone is not recommended for pregnant women. If you're considering naltrexone treatment, it's advisable to consult with your healthcare provider for more information and to discuss whether it's the right option for you.
